I have an thinkpad as well (
IBM T40). and I find myself in the same position as you right now, and I’ve been researching an upgrade to my Hard drive. whoever does work on your computer, you better make sure that they understand the unique nature of ThinkPads.
The Blue “instant restore” button will not work after upgrading the Harddrive. the reason being that the restore utility uses a hidden partition that tucked away. you can modify the BIOS to show the hidden partition, and have it able to copy the hidden partition as well.
IMHO. your better off not including this hidden restore partition because any restore would take you back to the base installed OS, and then you have to run through the tedious process of patching and reinstalling all your software and settings. easily killing two days just to get it all up to speed again. Running Norton Ghost would be a bit better, and a lot more customizable than what the blue button does. you can also download some software ( http://www.schlackman.org/programs/thinkpad.html ) to launch Ghost when the blue button is pressed.
Personally, and if your not adverse to using your own elbow grease, it wouldn’t take much to replacing it yourself.
I guess at this point you’re better off looking around http://forum.thinkpads.com/ . You’ll find plenty of threads and discussions on what you want to do for an upgrade from others. I’m sure they know all about the specific processes to the upgrades.
ANYWAYS…
what I initally was going to say it that whoever does your upgrades, know how to handle thinkpad and their unique install setup. and then it goes off into do-it-yourself land.. hah. sorry about that.
